Tin roofing: the early years

Early tin roof panels had horizontal seams every one to two feet
Early standing seam tin roofing panel with horizontal seams

The earliest tin roofing came in sections of approximately 10″ x 14″. By the 1830s, the length of the sections had increased about twofold. As the years passed, the section lengths continued to lengthen–improved transportation, such as train service, influenced this trend.

Today, these “horizontal seams” are missing from modern metal panel installations.

In our work, only rarely are these horizontal seams a leakage problem.
