How to deal with organic "stuff" on a roof
Standing seam metal roof near Harrisburg, PA

At first glance, this metal roof just south of Harrisburg, PA, appears clean and ready for applying a roof coating.  The lack of flaking, and  rust might lure some roofers to begin painting without any prepping.

Big mistake.

A simple test determined that there is a layer of organic debris on most of the panels.  If a coating had been applied, flaking would occur within several years.
